Schloss Wörlitz

Schloss Wörlitz is a neoclassical palace within the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, built with symmetrical stone walls and topped by a distinctive belvedere viewing platform. The building features tall windows and classical columns that frame views of the surrounding grounds.

A prince commissioned a prominent architect to build this summer residence between 1769 and 1773 as part of an ambitious garden art project. The palace emerged during an era when such enlightened structures reflected new ideals of reason and taste.

The palace displays Italian paintings, Dutch artworks, and English ceramics that reflect the taste of Enlightenment collectors. These works show the admiration for European cultures that were gathered during educational journeys.

Visitors can only explore the palace through guided tours in small groups, offering a more personal experience. It is best to visit during warmer months when the gardens are at their full beauty and outdoor activities are more available.

The mezzanine floor holds a collection of Polynesian objects from the 1700s sourced from Pacific exploration voyages. These artifacts show how enlightened collectors brought knowledge from distant lands back to their homes.
