Stadtschloss Lüneburg, Baroque château and courthouse at Market Square, Lüneburg, Germany.
Stadtschloss Lüneburg is a Baroque château and courthouse located at the Market Square. The three-story structure features a raised ground floor and a central portal accessed by a monumental staircase, creating a symmetrical and formally composed facade.
Duke Georg Wilhelm of Brunswick-Lüneburg commissioned architect Johann Caspar Borchmann to build this structure between 1695 and 1700, incorporating three earlier patrician houses into the new design. The building later transitioned through military use before becoming the District Court it remains today.
The building now serves the community as a working courthouse and shapes daily activity at the Market Square. Visitors encounter it as a living civic center rather than a historical relic frozen in time.
The palace stands at the heart of Market Square between the Town Hall and the Luna Fountain, making it impossible to miss. From this location, you can easily explore the surrounding historic Old Town on foot.
The structure served as home to Princess Éléonore d'Olbreuse, who lived there from 1705 until her death in 1722. This prominent resident left her mark on the building during its early decades of existence.
