Oberrödel, Medieval hamlet in Hilpoltstein, Germany
Oberrödel is a small hamlet southwest of Hilpoltstein, situated in the upper Roth valley at approximately 390 meters elevation. The settlement consists of scattered farmhouses and dwellings that blend into the rural landscape.
The settlement first appeared in written records around 1129 as an established community in the region. By the 18th century, it had developed into a small rural settlement with six separate properties.
The hamlet carries visible traces of its farming past, seen in former shepherd dwellings and traditional farmsteads dotting the valley. These buildings reflect how rural people lived and worked in this region for generations.
The hamlet is served by several bus stops, including Unterrödel Mitte, which connect it to surrounding towns. Since this is a very small settlement without tourist facilities, visitors should plan their trip from nearby larger towns.
The hamlet was once under the jurisdiction of three different authorities: the Heideck judicial office, the Eichstätt cathedral chapter, and the Hilpoltstein judicial office. This unusual arrangement reveals how fragmented local governance was during medieval times.
