Tiefbunker Kennedybrücke, Civil defense bunker in Rotherbaum, Germany
Tiefbunker Kennedybrücke is an underground protective facility in Eimsbüttel located between Kennedy Bridge and Lombards Bridge. It contains three chambers with a total of 134 seating spaces and 69 sleeping spaces, supplied by municipal water and power systems.
The bunker was built in 1963 as a replacement for the Four-Tube Shelter Ferdinandstor from World War II. The Eimsbüttel district office then took over management of the facility.
The bunker shows how Hamburg wanted to protect its citizens during the Cold War. It reflects the anxiety about conflict that gripped many European cities at that time.
Access is provided through entrances within Alsterpark that connect the various chambers. Visitors should be aware that it is an underground structure with limited facilities.
The facility has an unusual mix of rectangular and circular chambers hidden beneath the nearby park. This concealed structure shows how postwar construction often existed invisibly beneath busy urban spaces.
