The prince-abbot Honorius von Schreckenstein founded the property in 1781 as a provost residence and hunting lodge, completing it in three years. In the early 1800s it transformed into an educational institution, shifting its purpose from aristocratic retreat to center of learning.

The castle became a place where young women from across Europe came to study and develop their minds in the 19th century. This educational legacy shaped how the building is understood today, reflecting a time when such opportunities were rare for girls.
