Bergsee, Lake in Uslar, Germany.
Bergsee is a lake in Uslar covering about 2 hectares with a length of roughly 200 meters and a depth of about 15 meters. The shoreline includes a private camping facility and an artificial beach area for swimming.
The water body formed after mining operations extracted lignite and quartz sand from 1888 to 1911 and again briefly from 1945 to 1948. Once mining ended, a lake developed naturally in the former pit and became a protected natural monument in 1985.
The lake serves as a gathering place for nearby residents who come to walk, relax, and spend time by the water. The circular path around it is popular with locals throughout different seasons.
The shoreline is easy to reach with a walking path circling the lake and a swimming area on the northwestern side. A camping facility on the eastern shore offers overnight options for visitors who want to stay longer.
What makes this place special is that it emerged from an industrial past, showing how nature itself can transform an exhausted mining site into a living space. This shift from former quarry to protected natural area makes it a story of natural recovery.
