Emser Therme, Thermal bath in Bad Ems, Germany
Emser Therme is a thermal bath in the center of Bad Ems with seven pools fed by mineral-rich spring water and a sauna area built next to the Lahn River. The pools are set to different temperatures and are available both indoors and outdoors.
Bad Ems was already known as a spa town in the 16th century, drawing visitors who came for the healing properties of the thermal water. The current facility draws on the same springs that have defined the town for centuries.
Bathing culture in Bad Ems has long been tied to the Lahn River, and the thermal baths reflect that connection today. In the river sauna, visitors sit next to the water and look out over the river, which gives the visit a different feel from a typical indoor pool.
The baths are in the center of Bad Ems and easy to reach on foot from most places in town. Visitors should bring swimwear and a towel, though both can be rented at the facility.
The facility is home to Germany's first river sauna, a structure built directly on the bank of the Lahn. Those inside can look out through large windows onto the river, which is not something you often find in a sauna.
