Gartenhofsiedlung, Architectural ensemble in Herrenhausen-Stöcken, Germany.
The Gartenhofsiedlung is a residential complex in Hannover-Stöcken with red brick houses and flat roofs arranged around shared courtyards with gardens. The rows of houses follow a rectangular layout and sit close to the Marienwerder monastery.
The settlement was built around 1965 on former farmland behind the monastery forest, during a period of strong economic growth and urban expansion in Germany. It was part of a time when Hannover needed new residential districts for its growing population.
The settlement drew artists and intellectuals from the start, who lived and worked near the monastery complex. This blend of housing and artistic activity shaped the everyday life of the place.
The area is easy to reach on foot, and the green courtyard spaces are pleasant for a walk to experience the layout and architecture up close. Its proximity to the monastery makes it simple to visit both places together.
One particular row of houses within the settlement contains specialized artist workshops hidden behind tall brick walls, creating a visual contrast to the rest of the housing complex. These concealed studios show how art-minded residents integrated their work into the architectural design.
