Vogelkoje Meeram

Vogelkoje Meeram is a historic duck hunting facility on Amrum island with a central freshwater pond and curved channels extending from it to funnel birds into traps. The site preserves the physical layout and structures that made this hunting method possible.

The facility developed in the 1800s and operated as an active hunting site for several decades before falling out of use. It represents a period when organized duck hunting was an established practice on North Sea islands.

The site shows how island residents once hunted wild ducks as part of their food supply and seasonal way of life. The structures reveal how communities worked with nature to sustain themselves through hunting traditions.

The site sits inland on the island and is accessible through marked paths that loop around the former hunting grounds. Visitors should wear weather-appropriate clothing since the island can be windy and weather conditions change quickly.

A rotating trap system called the Helgoland rotating device allowed hunters to quickly control access to the channels by lifting wooden barriers. This clever mechanism made the hunting process more efficient when birds arrived.
