Kemenate Großbodungen, Baroque architectural structure in Am Ohmberg, Germany.

Kemenate Großbodungen is an ensemble of two 17th-century half-timbered houses in the centre of Großbodungen, joined by an old arcade. The two-winged complex is defined by artful oak timber framing on its outer facades, and an inscription above the gateway names Thomas Billeb as builder. The north wing, the house by the water, holds a large black kitchen with an open hearth and a chimney rising into the roof.

The Kemenate is an ensemble of two half-timbered houses; in 1621 it already consisted of two buildings held by Gabriel Schnee and Jobst Böttcher. In 1663 the Schwarzburg bailiff Thomas Billeb replaced the dilapidated old building with a stately oak-framed house, as the inscription above the gate records. His son Heinrich Christian inherited it in 1687; in 1729 it passed to Johann Friedrich Wackerhagen, whose family added Baroque panelling, doors and cross-mullioned windows until 1778.

Locals call the ensemble Kemnot, explained either as "Käme Noth" (may it bring safety) or from "domus caminata", a house with a fireplace; on the old Franconian-Saxon road between Nordhausen and Duderstadt it served as a heated resting place. From 2005 to 2018 the former residence of the Schwarzburg officials housed the Galerie in der Burg and a café with a coffee garden.

The two timber-framed houses of the ensemble stand in the historic centre of Großbodungen, in the Eichsfeld district, not in Am Ohmberg itself. The former gallery and café with its coffee garden closed in 2018, so the buildings are seen from the street and lane; the old arcade and the oak framework are best examined in daylight.

The name Kemnot has two explanations: "Käme Noth" (safety) and "Domus Caminata", a house with a fireplace. On a Franconian-Saxon road between Nordhausen and Duderstadt, the heated building served as a resting place; in Old High German "cheminata" meant a lodging with a warming hearth.
