General-Olbricht-Kaserne, Military barracks in Leipzig, Germany
General-Olbricht-Kaserne is a military facility in Leipzig composed of multiple buildings for housing and administrative functions. The compound occupies a substantial area and forms a self-contained military center with architectural features from different periods.
The compound was built between 1895 and 1897 as a barracks for Saxon infantry regiments of the German Empire. For over a century, it served various armed forces, most recently the Bundeswehr into the present day.
The barracks is named after Major General Friedrich Olbricht, a key figure in the resistance against Nazi rule. His name reminds visitors of Germany's complex military past during the 20th century.
The site is subject to military security regulations and is not freely accessible to the public. Visits are possible only with prior registration and authorization from the Bundeswehr.
Between 2015 and 2017, part of the barracks was repurposed as a temporary reception center for refugees. This demonstrates how military facilities can be adapted to address major social challenges.
