Schleusenspucker Rathenow, Bronze sculpture at City Lock, Rathenow, Germany
Schleusenspucker Rathenow is a bronze sculpture consisting of three human figures and a dog positioned near the canal. One of the figures is equipped with a water mechanism that periodically sprays water outward.
The sculpture references the period between the 1920s and 1930s when dock workers waited at the lock for work on cargo vessels. During this time, workers passed the hours with spitting contests.
The sculpture tells the story of working people at this location through scenes of daily dock life. It captures moments that were part of this place's reality for many years.
The sculpture sits at the western edge of downtown Rathenow along the city canal and is easy to reach on foot. The water mechanism operates independently and can be observed at any time of day.
The sculpture was designed in 2006 by artist Volker Michael Roth for a state garden exhibition and some figures feature actual water-fountain mechanisms. This detail shows how the artist merged history with playfulness.
