St Barbara

St. Barbara is a Catholic church in the Littenweiler district of Freiburg im Breisgau with a rectangular nave and a recessed choir structure. The facade features two cast metal portals and a large rose window that emphasize the entrance.

An original church stood on Sonnenberg mountain starting in 1449 until it was dismantled in 1862. The stones were then transported by ox carts to construct this building in the new location.

The interior features stained glass windows created by artist Edzard Seeger that blend religious symbols and depictions of Mary with modern artistic forms. These works shape the spiritual character of the space and give it a contemporary feel that goes beyond typical church decoration.

The church is easily accessible in the Littenweiler district and offers a quiet place to visit. Visitors should check standard church opening hours, as the building may be closed at certain times.

The church tower contains five bronze bells, with three dating from 1953 and two added later. These bells shape the acoustic identity of the neighborhood and are often overlooked by visitors.
