Zschornaer Teichgebiet, nature reserve in Sachsen, Germany
The Zschornaer Teichgebiet is a protected nature area in Saxony featuring two large ponds: Großteich Zschorna and Breiten Teich, surrounded by shorelines densely covered with trees and shrubs. Walking paths wind through the landscape, offering access to the water and the natural habitats that support birds and insects.
The area was officially designated as a protected site in 1954 and has been managed by authorities ever since. Before that, the ponds served as old fishery ponds, until the focus shifted to nature conservation.
The name comes from the village of Zschorna and reflects the region's connection to its waters. Today, visitors use the ponds and shorelines as places to observe birds and insects living in their natural habitat.
Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather, as paths lead through damp shorelines and wooded areas. The marked trails are easy to walk and suitable for visits at any time of year.
The ponds were created from gravel pits dug decades ago, which naturally filled with water over time. This transformation from human-worked land into a habitat for migrating birds shows how nature reclaims and restores what was once disturbed ground.
