Brahms-Museum, Biographical museum in Neustadt, Hamburg, Germany
The Brahms-Museum is a biographical museum in Neustadt housed within a merchant house dating to 1751. Two floors display photographs, manuscripts, concert programs, and belongings that belonged to the composer.
The museum opened in 1971 after Brahms' original birthplace was destroyed during World War II bombing in 1943. The institution was established near where the composer was originally born.
The museum displays items that belonged to Brahms and photographs showing how he lived and worked in the city. Visitors can see the connection between the composer and Hamburg through his everyday objects and correspondence.
The museum is located at Peterstraße 39 and welcomes visitors on weekdays and weekends. The collection spans two floors, so be prepared to walk up stairs during your visit.
The museum contains a piano from 1859 on which Brahms himself played. This instrument is one of the most valuable pieces in the collection and connects visitors directly to the composer's creative work.
