KomponistenQuartier Hamburg, Classical music museum in Neustadt, Germany
KomponistenQuartier is a music museum housed in several restored merchant houses along Peterstraße in Neustadt. The exhibitions focus on seven German composers from the 1700s and display their workspaces, instruments, and personal belongings.
The museum started as a Brahms collection in 1971 and grew into a larger project that opened in 2015. The houses were carefully restored to recreate where these composers lived in the 1700s and to preserve Hamburg's importance as a music center.
Each house reveals how individual composers worked with their instruments and created their music. Visitors walk through personal spaces that show how these musicians lived and made their art in Hamburg during the 1700s.
The museum is located in Neustadt and the individual houses are easy to reach on foot. Plan for several hours to see all the exhibitions, and note that upper floors require climbing stairs.
Many instruments on display are authentic recreations or original pieces from the composers' era. These objects help visitors understand the actual sounds these musicians heard and worked with every day.
