St. Gertraud is a hall church with a pitched roof and a recessed five-eighth choir, built at Pleicherkirchplatz in Würzburg's old town. Its square west tower, about 35 metres high, carries a pointed spire; the ochre rendered walls have sandstone frames and tracery in the post-Gothic Echter style. The nave has a flat ceiling and four bays of pointed-arch windows, and a one-storey lean-to on the south-west side shelters a sandstone Mount of Olives group.

St. Gertraud was built around 1130 by the city architect Enzelin as a private church in the northern suburb of Pleich and raised to parish church in 1133 by Bishop Embricho. The patronage passed to the Dominican convent of St. Mark in 1248, and the Gothic choir was consecrated in 1250. Prince-Bishop Julius Echter had the church rebuilt in its present form between 1611 and 1613; after war damage in 1945 it was restored by 1950.

The patron saint is Gertrude of Nivelles, abbess and carer of the sick, widows, pilgrims and prisoners, which made her a patron of medieval hospitals; her feast day is 17 March. Since 10 January 2010 St. Gertraud has belonged to the Würzburg Innenstadt parish community together with the cathedral parish, St. Johannes in Stift Haug and St. Peter und Paul.

The church stands on Pleicherkirchplatz, the central square of the Pleich quarter north of the Juliuspromenade and west of the Juliusspital. The entrance is on the west side, where the square tower rises about 35 metres. The southwest side holds the Ölberg chapel with its basket-arch opening and sandstone figures.

On the south-west side, a single-storey lean-to annex with a basket-arch opening shelters sandstone figures of the Mount of Olives, carved by Jörg Riemenschneider in the mid-16th century. Inside, a small reliquary has held remains of the shrine of the martyr Adrianus since 1978, after the original was destroyed by fire in 1945; Pleich citizens had rehoused the saint's bones in the church in 1806.
