Doppelhochhaus Helene-Weigel-Platz 6/7, High-rise building in Marzahn-Hellersdorf, Germany
The Doppelhochhaus Helene-Weigel-Platz 6/7 is a twin tower about 76 meters tall with 25 floors built using steel skeleton construction. Shops and services occupy the ground and first floors, while residential units fill the upper levels.
The building was completed in 1985 as part of the Marzahn residential development, following the trend of creating large-scale neighborhoods. Its architects Wolfgang Ortmann and Hartmudt Pautschhat shaped the character of an entire district in East Berlin.
The building's Plattenbau style shows how East Germany designed modern residential neighborhoods, with shops and services on the ground floor for daily needs. Visitors can still experience this mix of housing and commerce that shapes daily life in the neighborhood.
The building is easily accessible and offers shops and daily services on the lower floors. A concierge service has been on site since 2000 to assist residents and visitors with questions.
The south side of the building is covered with about 480 blue solar panels that generate power and sustainably supply electricity to the building. This green technology on the facade was a notable innovation for East Berlin when installed.
