Alter Friedhof, Cultural heritage cemetery in Offenbach am Main, Germany

Alter Friedhof is a large cemetery in Offenbach am Main featuring a central avenue lined with plane trees and sections organized for different types of burials. The grounds are defined by structured grave zones that reflect the facility's growth and development over more than a century.

Established in 1832 after the city outgrew its churchyard, the cemetery expanded significantly in 1860 to accommodate growing burial needs. Distinctive entrance buildings constructed in 1882 remain defining features of the grounds today.

The cemetery features distinct sections for Jewish burials, military memorials from World War I, and graves of prominent regional artists and figures. Walking through, you can observe how different communities have honored their dead across generations through varied grave styles and monuments.

The main entrance with its two late-classical side buildings faces Friedhofstraße. The cemetery is a quiet place for strolling and tracing graves; paths lead past the war graves and the Jewish section. Since 1998, urn burials have again been possible here. Check opening times before visiting.

Offenbach's crematorium, Germany's fifth, opened in 1899, not 1891, and the building is gone; only its doors survive, set into the cemetery wall. Cremation was rare in Germany until the late 19th century, after Gotha's first crematorium of 1878.
