Verlobungsurne, Cast-iron memorial urn on the Habichtstein cliff in Alexisbad, Harzgerode, Germany

The Verlobungsurne is a cast-iron memorial on the Habichtstein rock spur above the southern entrance of Alexisbad, at 330 metres above sea level. A vase-shaped finial with floral ironwork sits on a stepped pedestal; the front panel is engraved DËN, XXIX.XLIII, SEPTEMBER, 1845, while the south and north sides list the six ladies' and six gentlemen's names.

The Verlobungsurne was donated by Prince Hugo zu Hohenlohe-Oehringen, Duke of Ujest, to mark the stay of six noble couples from the Kingdom of Württemberg in Alexisbad from 10 to 13 September 1845. It was cast in an iron foundry in Silesia owned by the Hohenlohe family, in 1845 or 1845/1846. After heavy weathering it was dismantled in 1960 and rebuilt in 1961 at Mägdesprung using original parts, with support from Gebrüder Bamberg KG and the Carl Horn KG ironworks; it was repaired again in 1992.

The name Verlobungsurne (engagement urn) arose in popular usage, not from any documented betrothal; the 1845 meeting of six noble couples from Württemberg is not recorded as an engagement. The monument's south side lists the women's names (Caecilie, Caroline, Clementine, Friederike, Malwine, Pauline), the north side the men's (Alwin, Bruno, Karl, Herrmann, Hugo, Otto).

The monument stands on the Habichtstein rock spur above the southern entrance of Alexisbad, at 330 metres above sea level; the Selketalstieg runs along the cliff path past it. A small shelter called Am Habichtstein, with stamping point 177 of the Harzer Wandernadel, is right next to the urn. The west side facing the valley carries no inscription.

The location serves as a checkpoint in the Harzer Wandernadel hiking network, where walkers can collect stamps while exploring the surrounding nature. This function connects the monument to a popular activity for the entire region.
