Petruskapelle Alexisbad, Neoclassical wooden church in Harzgerode, Germany
The Petruskapelle Alexisbad is a neoclassical wooden structure featuring a central rotunda surrounded by four smaller quadratic annexes. The building is distinguished by its yellow wooden cladding and zinc sheet metal roofs.
The building was originally constructed between 1812 and 1815 as a teahouse for Duke Alexius. After his death, Duchess Friederike of Anhalt-Bernburg ordered its conversion into a chapel.
The chapel displays an altar painting that reproduces a depiction of Saint Peter by Anton Raphael Mengs, a Dresden court painter. This artwork remains a focal point inside the building.
The building now serves as a venue for concerts and civil marriage ceremonies throughout the year. Check ahead for scheduled events if you wish to enter and view the interior.
The chapel remained undamaged during the Selke River flood of April 1994, while much of Alexisbad was submerged. Its elevated position on higher ground protected it from destruction.
