Kutscherstube, building in Mägdesprung, Germany
The Kutscherstube was a timber-framed building in Mägdesprung, part of Harzgerode, standing since the early 18th century. The structure sat at the southern edge of the village along Untere Kreisstraße, facing art foundries and the Hüttensplatz across the road.
The house began as a foundry inn in the early 1700s, serving visitors and workers of the iron works established in the 17th century. Around the mid-1800s, a new wing was added, transforming it into a small hotel with guest rooms.
The building served as a gathering place for workers and travelers connected to the nearby iron foundry. Its name reflects its purpose: a spot where coachmen, laborers, and visitors would meet, eat, and share stories.
Only the outer walls remain from the original building following the 2018 fire. Access to the site is limited since the grounds are abandoned and vegetation covers the ruins.
The building was later called a health house and in the 1970s served as lodging for students from Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg. This unexpected function shows how the old structure adapted to new times before eventually being abandoned.
