Kinderheilstätte Harzgerode, Cultural heritage monument in Harzgerode, Germany
Kinderheilstätte Harzgerode is a former children's hospital set on a large wooded property in Harzgerode with separate buildings for different functions. The complex includes a main building, greenhouse, doctor residences, isolation ward, school building, and gatehouse arranged across the landscape.
The facility opened in 1931 and treated tuberculosis and respiratory conditions in children using specialized medicine and outdoor therapy methods. It operated until 1998 before stopping its medical work.
The buildings feature rounded windows and curved lines throughout, giving the spaces a gentle and child-friendly feeling. These design choices shape how visitors experience the complex as they walk through it today.
The sprawling grounds are accessible for visitors to explore the various buildings and wooded areas. The site operates today as an eco-village and event space, so checking local conditions and access information before visiting is worthwhile.
The property transformed into an eco-village in 2018, managed by the community group In der Heilstätte Harzgerode eG. This shift shows how historic medical facilities can find new purposes and communities.
