Anhalt Castle

Anhalt Castle is a fortified structure on a hilltop in Harzgerode built across multiple periods and fitted with defensive walls and several towers. The compound includes residential chambers, storage rooms, and ramparts that reveal how a medieval noble stronghold was organized and used.

The stronghold originated in the medieval period as a fortification and later expanded into a residence by ruling families, with its importance shifting alongside regional political power. Over the centuries it underwent multiple reconstructions and additions that reflected its changing role and needs.

The castle belonged to successive noble families whose influence shaped the region for centuries, and this connection to local power remains visible in how the place is understood today. Visitors can see how closely the stronghold was tied to the control and governance of surrounding territories.

The site is open year-round, with the best visiting window from April through October when tours and exhibitions operate regularly. Parking is located at the hill base, and the climb to reach the structure requires moderate physical effort and comfortable footwear.

The castle's underground chambers featured ventilation systems that allowed food to be stored even during warmer months and siege conditions. This technical ingenuity demonstrates how carefully medieval fortress builders planned for long-term survival and self-sufficiency.
