Stadtkirche St. Marien

Stadtkirche St. Marien is a medieval church with an 86-meter tower supported by twelve internal pillars. Its Gothic structure shapes the skyline of Kemberg with a distinctive profile.

The church was built in medieval times but gained major significance from 1521 onward when Kemberg embraced Lutheran ideas. This turning point reshaped the congregation and its religious direction.

Inside you find a 15th-century sandstone sacrament house and fragments of an altarpiece by Lucas Cranach the Younger. These pieces show the artistic care the community invested in its worship space.

The building opens daily from April through October, while winter visits need to be arranged in advance through the parish office. Check opening times beforehand and inform the parish about larger groups ahead of time.

Martin Luther preached here on seven documented occasions between 1518 and 1534. These visits connect this space directly to one of Europe's most influential religious figures.
