Südseehaus, Commercial office building in Hamburg-Altstadt, Germany
The Südseehaus is a commercial office building in Hamburg's Altstadt district featuring four characteristic gables across its facade. It stands at the intersection of Mönckebergstraße, Lange Mühren, and Spitalerstraße and now houses a major department store.
Construction completed in 1911 under architect Carl Gustav Bensel with 54 office units and retail spaces. The structure survived the heavy air raids on Hamburg in 1943 and underwent major renovation work afterward.
The building displays the architectural language of the Kontorhaus style, reflecting Hamburg's commercial power in the early 20th century. Today its distinctive facade with four gables shapes the character of this central business district.
The building sits centrally near the main train station with good public transportation connections. It is easy to reach on foot and located in the heart of Hamburg's shopping district.
The original facade survived the 1943 air raids intact while the interior was completely redesigned in 1958. This shows how significant preserving the building's outer appearance was for the city's character.
