St. Mauritius, New Gothic church in Schwanheim, Germany.
St. Mauritius is a New Gothic church in Schwanheim with a 75-meter tower that dominates the neighborhood skyline. Inside, the main nave spans 16 meters wide and the transept extends 25 meters across, while six bells ring for services.
The church was built between 1899 and 1901, replacing earlier religious structures that dated back to 880. This New Gothic renewal reflected the growing needs of the community at the end of the 19th century.
The name honors Saint Maurice, a figure central to the local religious tradition and community identity. Residents gather here for services and celebrations that mark the church calendar and shape the rhythm of neighborhood life.
The interior can accommodate about 880 seated visitors or 1500 standing, making it spacious for large gatherings. Regular services and special occasions take place throughout the week and are open for visitors to observe.
Excavations in 2001 uncovered stone artifacts, including a crucified Christ figure that has been displayed in the church since 2008. These findings offer a rare glimpse into older religious practices and artistic expressions that once existed at this site.
