The State Museum of Art and Cultural History occupies Gottorf Castle, with most galleries on the ground and first floors. The late-15th-century Gothic Hall holds sacred art, including the Landkirchen altar from around 1380 and an oversized crucifix from around 1500. The Plön Hall, built around 1930 from paneling of Plön Castle, represents 18th-century art, and the Kreuzstall shows 20th-century art, craft and design together.

The museum was founded in the 1880s and has occupied Gottorf Castle since 1948. Since 1998 it has been run by the Stiftung Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen Schloss Gottorf. Its subject is the cultural history of Schleswig-Holstein from the Middle Ages to the present, shown on 25,000 m² of exhibition space.

The museum's name refers to the art and cultural history of Schleswig-Holstein from the Middle Ages to the present. In the Plöner Saal, panelling from Plön Castle installed around 1930 frames 18th-century art, and the Jugendstil rooms combine painting, sculpture and craft. The gallery of 19th-century art shows leading painters of the Danish Golden Age.

Most of the collection is in the main building on the ground and first floors; special exhibitions use the Reithalle or the Kreuzstall. The graphic collection of 85,000 sheets can be visited only by prior appointment. The museum library moved in 2007 into the former stables, a nearly 500 m² extension of the Reithalle in the northeast of the castle island.

In the Neuwerkgarten, a Globushaus holds a walkable globe over three metres in diameter, its outer surface painted with a 17th-century map. Visitors step inside the sphere rather than merely looking at it. The museum's graphic collection, by contrast, holds 85,000 sheets and opens only by prior arrangement.
