Kirche St. Zeno, Romanesque church in Bad Reichenhall, Germany

St. Zeno is a Romanesque church in Bad Reichenhall featuring a 48-meter-high tower and extending 90 meters in length. The structure combines Romanesque architecture with later Gothic elements visible in its interior furnishings.

Construction began in 1136 as an Augustinian monastery and took 80 years to complete. This extended building period was typical of major Romanesque projects during the Staufer era.

The church displays late Gothic furnishings such as intricately carved choir stalls and an ornate baptismal font that remain visible inside today. These pieces reflect the craft traditions that have been preserved within this space over the centuries.

The church is centrally located in Bad Reichenhall and easily accessible on foot. Visitors should note that the building is shared with the Maria Ward Girls' School, so certain areas may sometimes have restricted access.

On Christmas Day, direct sunlight streams through the large rose window and illuminates the high altar at 3:00 PM. This effect shows how medieval builders deliberately considered the sun's position when orienting the structure.
