Alter Friedhof Berchtesgaden, Historic cemetery in Berchtesgaden, Germany.
Alter Friedhof Berchtesgaden is a historic cemetery situated next to the Franciscan Church with mature trees and ornately carved gravestones throughout the grounds. The site displays tombstones from the 19th and early 20th centuries as well as cemetery wall sections dating from the 17th century.
The cemetery was established in 1685 and developed into a significant burial ground for the town. The oldest preserved structures along its walls date to the 17th century, marking the beginning of this long-standing tradition.
The cemetery contains graves of people who shaped the town, including Anton Adner who lived to 117 years old, and mountaineer Toni Kurz famous for climbing the Eiger. Their resting places tell stories of individuals who left their mark on this Alpine community.
The cemetery is located between the AlpenCongress center and the pedestrian zone, making it easily accessible on foot. Visitors should note that dogs are not permitted on the grounds.
In March 2020, the German UNESCO commission recognized the cemetery by including it in the nationwide directory of intangible cultural heritage. This official acknowledgment reflects its role as a meaningful place of remembrance in Alpine society.
