Alter Markt

The trapezoidal Alter Markt features the Magdeburger Reiter, a bronze equestrian statue, and stands between the baroque Old Town Hall and St. John's Church twin towers.

The square dates back to 965 as a merchant settlement and served as a model for other markets established under Magdeburg law from the 12th century.

Archaeological findings indicate that the square's original pavement layers date to the 12th century, with modern excavations revealing multiple historical construction phases.

The market operates Tuesday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, with direct access via tram lines 1, 2, 4, 8, 9, and 10.

The Roland statue, reinstated in 2005, reproduces the design from Johannes Pomarius's 1589 chronicle after the original was destroyed in 1631.
