The Kapitänshäuser consists of ten residential buildings along Weserstrasse, featuring classical architectural elements and balanced proportions in their design.
During the 19th century, these houses were constructed for ship captains when Vegesack served as a primary maritime center for trade and shipping.
Each building in the ensemble bears the name of a specific ship captain, reflecting the deep connection between Vegesack and its maritime traditions.
The buildings received protected monument status in 1984 and are maintained by Bremen's Office for Historic Preservation through regular restoration work.
The street earned the nickname 'Millionenviertel' in the mid-1800s, when 37 ship captains, 35 widows, and 31 craftsmen resided in this neighborhood.
