Sprengelpark, Neighborhood park in Wedding, Berlin, Germany
Sprengelpark is a public green space of around one hectare located in Wedding between Sprengelstrasse and Kiautschoustrasse. It features play equipment for children ranging from ages 3 to 16, including a sandbox, slide, swings, climbing structures, trampoline, and basketball court, along with a memorial stone marking the site's industrial history.
The site was home to the Rohrbach aircraft manufacturing company from 1924 to 1931, where 31 planes were built and later transported through the narrow neighborhood streets. After the factory closed, the land was eventually transformed into a public park.
The park carries its name from a community competition, showing how local residents had a say in shaping this place. This involvement in naming reflects how people in the neighborhood feel ownership over the space.
The park is easily accessible on foot and has plenty of space for children of different ages to play and explore. During warmer months it serves as a good outdoor spot, and typically sees lighter foot traffic compared to larger parks in the area.
The memorial stone on the grounds preserves more than just the memory of the aircraft factory, it shows how industrial sites in European cities transform into public gathering spaces. This transformation reflects a broader pattern where neighborhoods reclaim and repurpose historical working sites for modern community use.
