Quarksteine, Natural monument and rock formation in Hirschfeld, Germany
Quarksteine is a granite rock formation made of large blocks stacked upon one another, displaying both flat and rounded shapes. Natural gaps and crevices run between the stones, creating passages that open into small cave-like spaces.
The formation was shaped over millions of years through geological processes that stacked the granite blocks into their current arrangement. Local folklore from past centuries featured tales of dwarves living in the caves and working at a nearby mill.
The name Quarksteine comes from the flat shapes of certain rocks that resemble traditional Saxon Quarkkeulchen pastries. This playful naming reflects how local people have always connected their landscape with everyday objects from their region.
Several hiking paths reach the formation, with the main route starting from Talsperre Wolfersgrün and passing through varied terrain and elevation changes. Wear sturdy footwear to safely navigate between the rock crevices and over the uneven stone surfaces.
The rock structure contains caves within its interior that are illuminated by sunlight filtering through the natural gaps between the granite blocks. These underground spaces formed through erosion and surprise visitors who discover them while moving through the narrow passages.
