Städtische Nervenklinik für Kinder und Jugendliche Wiesengrund, Memorial psychiatric hospital for children in Reinickendorf, Germany.
The Städtische Nervenklinik für Kinder und Jugendliche Wiesengrund is a former psychiatric hospital and children's health facility in Reinickendorf, now serving as a memorial site. The grounds at Eichborndamm included dormitories, consulting rooms, offices, and auxiliary structures spread across several pavilions for medical purposes.
The facility opened in 1929 and carried out experiments on children from 1942 to 1945 who had been labeled by doctors as developmentally impaired or physically disabled. At least 81 young patients died as a result of these interventions, while many others suffered lasting harm.
The site takes its name from Wiesengrund, the street where it stands, and served as a hospital for young patients with neurological or psychiatric conditions. Visitors walking through the rooms today see exhibits showing how children were classified and treated, often according to criteria now considered harmful and unjust.
The grounds are open to the public and offer guided tours that must be booked ahead, as the interior spaces are not open at all times. Visitors should be prepared for difficult subject matter and are asked to maintain a respectful atmosphere during their visit.
The hospital was part of a network of more than 30 facilities across Germany where similar experiments on children took place. Many files and records remained sealed for decades after the war ended and were only made accessible to the public much later.
