Nathanaelkirche, Lutheran church in Lindenau, Leipzig, Germany
Nathanaelkirche is a church in the Lindenau district built from red brick with a 74-meter tower dominating its exterior. The Neo-Gothic structure contains three naves and a polygonal choir, with an 1800s organ and furnishings that fill the interior space.
The church was built between 1881 and 1884 following designs by architects August Hartel and Constantin Lipsius. It replaced an older medieval village church as Leipzig grew into an industrial city during that period.
Named after the apostle Nathanael, the church displays original furnishings that reveal how the congregation worshipped during the late 1800s. Walking through the interior, you see how faith and craftsmanship were expressed in the altar, pulpit, and every detail.
The church sits in a quiet residential neighborhood and is easy to reach by tram or bus from central Leipzig. The ground floor is level, making it comfortable to explore the interior and its furnishings.
The stained glass windows from 1887 depict the four evangelists alongside Peter and Paul, keeping their original late 1800s color palette intact. These windows represent skilled glasswork from that era and are rarely found in such good condition.
