Bergkirche Oybin

Bergkirche Oybin is a Baroque church in the Zittau Mountains featuring a wooden tower topped with a dome and lantern, complemented by a sacristy on the east side. The building has an irregular floor plan that adapts to its rocky mountain setting.

Construction of this prayer house began in 1708 and was completed in 1709, initially serving only for baptisms, weddings, and funerals. The building gradually became an important place for the religious community in the region.

The wooden galleries inside display paintings in shades of gray that show the Lord's Prayer and scenes of sin, salvation, and judgment from the Bible. These artworks create a spiritual setting that guides visitors through religious themes as they move through the church.

The church is open year-round for visitors seeking prayer and quiet reflection in a mountain setting. Wear sturdy shoes for the visit, as access involves mountain paths with uneven terrain.

The northwestern corner of the building incorporates a natural rock formation directly into its structure rather than removing or altering it. This unconventional approach shows how the church merges with its surroundings and creates an organic connection to the landscape.
