Burg Buschdorf, Medieval castle in Bonn, Germany.
Burg Buschdorf is a former knight's seat at Buschdorfer Straße 1 in northwest Buschdorf, Bonn. Its core is a square tower 10 metres on each side, with ground-floor walls about 2 metres thick, built of basalt, tuff and trachyte, with brick added after the 1874 fire. The tower is now three storeys and lived in; the moat that once surrounded the complex is gone.
Burg Buschdorf began as a residential and defensive tower guarding the Aachen–Bonn trade route; its exact origin date is unknown. Around the end of the 12th century it was expanded into a moated castle with an integrated farmstead, and it was first mentioned in 1217. The Cistercian monastery of Graurheindorf drew income from the estate and paid dues on it to the Electorate of Cologne. From the 18th century the complex passed through several families, among them the von Kleist and von Bassenheim.
The name Buschdorf is tied to the estate that the Cistercian monastery of Graurheindorf profited from, paying dues on it to the Electorate of Cologne. From 1822 the Frings family leased the farm, owning it from 1843; in 1936 Frings-Watterott switched the farm to apple growing, Buschdorf's first quality fruit plantation. The farm buildings housed a wine wholesaler until 2020.
Burg Buschdorf is privately owned and cannot be visited inside; the tower and farm buildings are seen from Buschdorfer Straße, at the northwestern edge of Bonn. The neighbouring village of Hersel, in Bornheim, begins about 300 metres away. The castle cross set up in 1880 by Josef and Peter Frings stands about 200 metres west of the complex, beyond the Rheinuferbahn, between two lime trees.
The future professional boxer Adolf Heuser worked as a farmhand at the Buschdorf estate in the 1920s. A cross of 1880 by Josef and Peter Frings stands about 200 metres west of the castle, beyond the Rhine bank railway, between two lime trees.
