Herseler Werth, Protected nature reserve in Bornheim, Germany
Herseler Werth is a nature reserve on a Rhine island between Bonn and Cologne. The area contains wetland meadows and woodlands that provide habitat for numerous animal and plant species.
The area formed through medieval flooding between the 12th and 13th centuries, when high water eroded parts of Hersel and created the island. This reshaping by water permanently influenced the landscape we see today.
The reserve functions as a research site for scientists studying endangered species listed in the Federal Republic of Germany's Red List.
The site is closed to regular visitors and requires special permission to enter. Strong river currents around the banks make them dangerous and difficult to approach safely.
Divers discovered a World War II bomb weighing around 500 kilograms during low water conditions in 2009. The discovery led to evacuation of nearby towns and a controlled explosion.
