Staustufe Riedenburg

The Staustufe Riedenburg is a lock on the Altmühl River that raises and lowers ships between two different water levels. On either side are banks where you can watch vessels move through, and the structure is part of a larger canal system connecting multiple rivers.

The lock was built in the second half of the 20th century as part of an ambitious project to connect the Rhine to the Danube. This made it possible for the first time for ships to travel directly from Northern Europe to the Black Sea.
