Historischer Friedhof Wandsbek, park in Hamburg, Germany
The Historischer Friedhof Wandsbek is an old burial ground next to the Christuskirche on Wandsbeker Marktstraße. The roughly 1000 square meter site features simple stone gravestones and small monuments, including a classical mausoleum for the Schimmelmann family with clean lines and traditional design.
The burial ground was founded in 1623 as Wandsbek's oldest cemetery and served as a resting place for nearly 200 years. The neighboring church was rebuilt between 1953 and 1955 after the previous one was destroyed during the Second World War.
The cemetery carries the names of notable Wandsbek families like Claudius and Schimmelmann on its gravestones. Visitors can see how the community has honored its important members through simple, respectful memorials.
The cemetery is freely accessible during daylight hours and is located within walking distance of Wandsbek Market Square at the corner of Wandsbeker Marktstraße and Robert-Schuman-Brücke. The entrance is marked by a bronze monument and provides a suitable spot for quiet walks and historical exploration.
The poet Matthias Claudius, who wrote a famous evening prayer and published the newspaper Wandsbecker Bothen, rests here alongside his wife Rebekka. A reflection spot near his grave offers visitors a quiet place to ponder his literary legacy.
