Bahnausbesserungswerk, Railway maintenance facility in Limburg an der Lahn, Germany.
The Bahnausbesserungswerk is a former railway maintenance facility with two large repair halls and several support buildings across a substantial industrial site in Limburg an der Lahn. The structures date from the 19th century and display the solid construction methods of that era, with red brick and steel facades, some still housing workshops or serving commercial uses today.
The facility was founded in 1862 as a maintenance center under Nassau administration and became one of the region's key workshops for train upkeep. Operations continued without interruption until 2005, when modern maintenance standards led the railway to rethink its needs.
The facility shows how railway workers maintained their locomotives over 150 years ago, with massive halls of stone and steel that still impress today. Today shops and stores use these buildings in new ways, bringing the place from factory to gathering spot.
The grounds are partially open to the public, especially the eastern section with shops and stores. The western side with active rail lines should not be entered due to safety concerns.
Engineer Moritz Hilf, who designed the entire Lahn Valley Railway line, also planned and managed this workshop during its early years. His influence shapes the structure and quality of the buildings to this day.
