Werbeliner See, Protected lake area in Wiedemar, Germany.
Werbeliner See is a protected area centered on a freshwater lake in northern Leipzig that covers approximately 450 hectares of water. The site includes forests, meadows, and shorelines with varied habitats that visitors can explore on foot or by bicycle.
The area formed in the 1990s when a large lignite mining site called Delitzsch-Southwest was flooded after extraction ended. This transformation gradually created a natural landscape with diverse habitats for plants and animals.
The lake serves as a crucial stopover point for migratory birds and attracts birdwatchers seeking to observe diverse species. The protected area functions as a habitat where wildlife has gradually established itself since the mining site was transformed.
The protected area is accessible from several surrounding towns and offers good conditions for walking and cycling around the lake. Visitors should know the terrain is flat and parking is available at main entry points.
Two restricted zones covering 805 hectares combined remain off-limits to human activity, allowing nature to develop completely undisturbed. These protected areas are rare in Germany and demonstrate how abandoned mining landscapes can recover naturally.
