Elefantenrutsche, Concrete sculpture in Eisenach, Germany
The Elephant Slide is a concrete artwork in Eisenach composed of 14 individual parts that form a stylized elephant. Its trunk serves as a functional sliding surface for children to use.
The sculpture was created in 1967 by sculptors Johannes Peschel, Egmar Ponndorf, and Vinzenz Wanitschke and installed in the Wilhelm-Pieck-Strasse area. It developed from a 1962 Dresden prototype that inspired similar installations across East Germany.
The sculpture shows how East German designers merged art and playground equipment into a single creation. Similar elephant slides appeared across multiple cities as the design became popular.
The site is publicly accessible and best enjoyed during dry weather for playing and exploring. Following extensive renovation in 2019, the structure meets current safety standards for playground equipment.
In 2021, the structure earned consideration for registration in the Thuringian Monument Book, acknowledging its artistic and historical importance. This recognition shows how the artwork transcends its simple function as a playground feature.
