Islamisches Forum Penzberg, Contemporary mosque in Penzberg, Germany
The Islamic Forum Penzberg is a contemporary mosque with rectangular forms and blue glass facades indicating the prayer direction, crowned by a slender minaret rising 17.86 meters (about 59 feet). It contains prayer halls, educational rooms, a library, and community spaces spread across approximately 1700 square meters (18,300 square feet).
Construction began with the foundation stone ceremony in June 2003, and the building opened to the community in September 2005. It was built to serve the growing needs of the local Muslim community in the region.
The entrance displays religious inscriptions in both German and Arabic, showing how the community expresses its faith within the local context. These writings make the connection between belief and daily life visible to visitors.
The building is easily accessible and designed to accommodate various activities, from religious gatherings to community events. Visitors should note that certain areas follow religious traditions and appropriate conduct is expected when entering prayer spaces.
The building won the Wessobrunn Architecture Prize in 2008 for successfully blending modern European design language with Islamic architectural elements. This recognition demonstrates how contemporary architecture can unite different cultural traditions.
