St. Katharinen, Lutheran church in Gelting, Germany
St. Katharinen is a Gothic brick building in Gelting with an interior redesigned in classicist style. The altar wall consists of five axes and was designed by Franz Joachim Schmädl from Flensburg.
The building was constructed around 1300 at the initiative of the Gut Gelting estate owners and remained under their administration for a long time. Control by local landowners ended only in 1928.
The church is named after Saint Catherine and displays the hand of Franz Joachim Schmädl, an artist from Flensburg, whose classicist design shapes the interior. This work reflects how the space was crafted for worship and prayer over centuries.
The church is located at Norderholm 19 and is accessible to visitors during regular services. It is wise to ask about opening times before planning a visit.
The building houses two separate crypts with different origins: one was built in 1674 by Asmus von Rumohr. The second crypt was reserved for the local nobility.
