The Church in Breitenfelde is a 13th-century early Gothic hall church. Its walls are fieldstone, while the portals and windows are brick; the choir's east wall holds a stepped group of three windows and a glazed-brick rose in the gable. A 36 m tower with a steep dark spire and clock face was added to the west side in 1866–1868, and the nave's slate roof was renewed in 2019.

Breitenfelde is first documented in 1194 and listed as a parish in the Ratzeburg tithe register in 1230, so a church existed by the early 13th century. The core is an early Gothic hall church of that century; patronage alternated between Lübeck and the Duchy of Lauenburg until Lübeck renounced its claims in 1747. A fire on 16 May 1685 destroyed the rectory and its archive, leaving earlier history poorly documented. A neo-Gothic rebuild took place in 1866–1868, adding the 36 m tower, and the interior was remodelled again in 1967–1968.

The parish is recorded in the Ratzeburg tithe register of 1230, and the church's patron rights passed back and forth between Lübeck and the Duchy of Lauenburg until Lübeck renounced its claims to the Mölln lands in 1747. The medieval font of Gotland limestone, dated in its upper part to the 14th century, stood outside the church from the early 19th century until 1931, serving as a cattle trough; its damaged foot was repaired in 1968.

The church stands in Breitenfelde near Mölln, in the Duchy of Lauenburg district of Schleswig-Holstein. The main entrance was moved to the west annex during the 1866–1868 rebuild, and the former south portal was walled up. The 36 m tower and its steep spire rise on the west side, so the nave and choir lie to the east of it.

The four main pillars inside are brick, and diagonally opposite pillars are designed identically, a feature matching the older part of the Marienkirche in Büchen. Until the 19th century the church had a stepped gable on the west side and a separate wooden bell tower standing south of the building.
