Wallfahrtskirche St. Maria Himmelfahrt

Wallfahrtskirche St. Maria Himmelfahrt is a Catholic pilgrimage church located on Marienberg hill in Burghausen. A grand external staircase of 50 steps leads to the entrance, with the architectural design incorporating symbolic elements that reflect spiritual devotion.

Built between 1762 and 1765 under the direction of Johann Nepomuk Hofer, the church represents Baroque religious architecture in Bavaria. Its construction coincided with a period of renewed devotion to Marian pilgrimage sites throughout the region.

The interior walls display frescoes by Munich painter Martin Heigl, showing Mary surrounded by angels and saints in religious scenes. These artworks guide visitors' attention toward the central religious message as you move through the space.

The church is open during regular visiting hours and offers guided tours in several languages. Keep in mind that special access rules apply during religious services, and visitors should respect the meditative atmosphere of the space.

The main altar holds a 17th-century grace image carved by sculptor Johann Georg Lindt, depicting Mary as Queen of Heaven holding a scepter. This intricate work often goes unnoticed by visitors arriving in a rush.
