Creuzburger Werratal-Hänge, Special Area of Conservation in Wartburgkreis, Germany
The Creuzburger Werratal-Hänge is a protected conservation area featuring steep limestone cliffs with diverse vegetation zones across sloped terrain. The site combines several nature reserves in one larger protected zone with varied plant life on the hillsides.
The area received protection status in 1999, bringing together three separate nature reserves into one unified zone. This consolidation allowed stronger management of the different habitats under a single coordinated protection system.
The slopes show traditional farming through small grazing areas where sheep and goats roam, preserving natural habitats for protected species. This land use shapes how the landscape looks today and allows livestock and wild nature to coexist.
The area can be explored via multiple hiking trails and the Werratal cycling path, which offer views across the slopes. These established routes allow visitors to move through the terrain while watching for local plants and animals.
The site supports more than twenty orchid species thriving on chalky soils, along with nesting spots for red kites and eagle owls. These rare birds use the cliffs and open areas for breeding and hunting.
