Käthe Wohlfahrt Weihnachtsdorf occupies five connected houses on Herrngasse 1 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Its 250 square metres hold around 5,000 Christmas exhibits, among them nutcrackers, pyramids, wooden, glass and tin tree ornaments, music boxes and items dating from the 19th century. A path leads to a square with a large spruce hung with painted wooden toys even in summer, and Christmas music plays throughout.

The Käthe Wohlfahrt company opened the Weihnachtsdorf in 1981 at Herrngasse 1 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Its founder had moved from Saxony to West Germany with a music box; unable to find another once the Christmas markets closed, he ordered ten music boxes from Saxony and began selling Christmas goods year-round. His son Harald later added the Christmas museum and expanded the shop into the five-house complex.

The name comes from the shop's layout: five connected houses around a courtyard where a large spruce stands, decorated even in summer with painted wooden ornaments. Christmas music plays throughout the complex year-round, and the shop keeps its headquarters here rather than in its branches abroad.
